Children

Research Notes: Wife - Lorene Johnson

Had no children.

From Mark Johnson on 13 May 2012:
"Lorene worked as a teacher when she was younger.

"Lorene was a mystery figure - she suffered from bouts
of depression and always seemed a bit frail and dour.
But on other days, she was fine and engaged.

"Lorene married Harry F. Olson a world famous scientist in the
field of acoustics. Harry invented the microphone used by all
the radio stations in the 1930s, invented the first electronic
synthesizer, and holds numerous patterns - of interest perhaps to
your Dad was the patent he holds on the stethoscope used by
cardiologists that transmits sounds thru the rubber tubes without
distortion. I remember him vividly - smart, always owned a
Corvette. He was a mega big-wig at RCA.

"Later in life, as Dorothy and Lorene aged, they needed care and
they moved into a facility in HIghtstown, NJ. They were there together,
but they did not talk to each other, never ate together, or anything.
It was sad, very sad. My father would visit them every week or two
and there was nothing he could do about it.

"Within a month of my Dad passing away in 1990 (and my first
daughter Carys being born) we got a phone call that Dorothy
passed away. (I think it was Dorothy). So we started to make all
the arrangements, etc and the next day the phone rang again and
we learned that Lorene had passed away. So the sisters had died
a day apart and my Dad the month earlier - literally two generations
of that line gone in less than a month."

Birth Notes: Husband - Louis L. Johnson

Mark Johnson has two birthdates - 12 September 1875 and 12 October 1875. The first may be the birthdate, the second the christening date.

Research Notes: Husband - Louis L. Johnson

Youngest son of Lauritz and Caroline Johnson. Father listed (in marriage record?) as Louis Johnson, mother as Caroline Caspison.
---
From Mark Johnson 12 May 2012:
Briefly, on Louis and Anna Walters - the stories always go like this. Louis L
(referred to as Louie) married pretty badly - Anna was a real domineering
person - cold, hard, Prussian (my father would say). Louis was open, warm
and perhaps a bit too fond of the drink. He lived for some time in Princeton,
worked as a school crossing guard in his old age and was universally loved.

Except at home. He often slept in the boiler room because they would
lock him out. My dad would sneak downstairs and let Louis in, he would
sleep (sometimes sleep it off) and be gone in the morning before Anna
would find him.

I go by the old Elementary school a few times a week (we live in Princeton) and
have thought hundreds of times...........What is your damn name Louis?????
So if you think you wanted to know - well, me too!!

My mother speaks of his dignity and courage through his last days
(bladder cancer) and how much of an impression it made on her as a
young nurse.

His wife Anna I should remember (she died when I was 9) but I don't.
I know that Dad called her "Ober-Gross-muhter" because she rarely
did anything but bark out orders. Then again, my father didn't take orders
well. But even my Mom says she was tough to warm to - like a bee in a
bad mood.

I am sure she wasn't that bad but there may not have been much to love
either.
-------
From Mark Johnson 13 May 12012:
I grew up 1/4 mile from my grandparents Clarence and Christina's house, built on land cleared by my great grandfather Louie. A house plunked down in a forest - I remember thinking, "How could he have ever done that?" I remember asking when I was very young if
we were related to Paul Bunyan because the forest was so deep. And, as I
said yesterday, driving by the school where Louie "worked" as a crossing guard
several times a week made the whole thing an often present mystery. Who was this
man? This was more than an intellectual exercise for me and I am so happy
to get at least some of the "i"s dotted and"t"s crossed.

Notes: Marriage

Witnesses: Mary Johnson and M. I. or perhaps C. C. Johnson per Mark Johnson.
FamilySearch transcription in "Illinois, Marriages, 1815-1935" has her name as Ann Walters, and has his name as Louis Johnson, parents Louis Johnson and Caroline Caspison.

Research Notes: Child - Clarence Frederick Johnson

From Mark Johnson:
"Clarence and Christine married in MT, moved to Ill., back to MT before settling in NJ in the early 1940s. Clarence was an executive at RCA, Christina was a high school principal. They had one child, my fater Jack Walter Johnson."

Research Notes: Child - Lorene Johnson

Had no children.

From Mark Johnson on 13 May 2012:
"Lorene worked as a teacher when she was younger.

"Lorene was a mystery figure - she suffered from bouts
of depression and always seemed a bit frail and dour.
But on other days, she was fine and engaged.

"Lorene married Harry F. Olson a world famous scientist in the

"Later in life, as Dorothy and Lorene aged, they needed care and

Research Notes: Child - Dorothy Johnson

Had no children.
From Mark Johnson 13 May 2012:
"Dorothy married John Volkmann, an engineer at RCA, who was
a designer of sound systems in numerous arenas, including
the sound system at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.
and the Mann Center in Philadelphia.

"They lived in Princeton and my memory as a child was that
Dorothy and Lorene and Harry and John went everywhere and
did everything together.

"As an aside, when John Volkmann passed away, Dorothy wanted
to remain on her own in Princeton. So my father Jack (the only child
of Clarence, Dorothy and Lorene) fixed her up in an apt right
across from the university. I helped move Dorothy in (I was
in my early 20s) and would occasionally go visit Dorothy to see
how she was. I walked in one day and siting in her kitchen, eating
lunch with her, was Brooke Shields, who attended Princeton and
lived in the building. Dorothy had no idea who she was, I mean none,
but I did. I visited Dorothy a lot more often after that and so there
we would sit, on several occasions, my slightly ditzy 80 year old aunt,
this huge celebrity (who really was very nice, especially to Dorothy), and
me, with visions of red carpets and celebrity in my future if only...........
oh well.......I still remember her eyebrows."
