Although his surname was "Sprunger," he apparently went by "Springer" for most of his life. His gravestone reads "Sprunger." "J. E. Springer" was a witness to the marriage of William H. Wallace and Edith Poapst in 1911. Will referred to him as "Jim Springer."

Jim was a widower before 15 April 1910 (U.S. Census), which makes sense for James E. Sprunger, whose first wife, Elizabeth, died in 1909.
