  General Notes:

A short remembrance from grandson Donald C. Wallace III, 28 Aug 2011:
"She sang folk songs in Swedish, read us Swedish folk tales (wish I could remember from where), and there seemed to be a story about our Sami or Lapp ancestors who herded reindeer. That would make us First World People.

"Bertha was the top high school English teacher before she married Don. She took each of us in hand and corrected our elementary school essays. She also would roll out butcher paper on the hallway walls and give us all crayons and paintbrushes, and then tell us we were going to paint a mural. This would take a whole weekend, sort of an ongoing project. The subject I enjoyed painting most was the Greek Myths, which she made sure we painstakingly researched.

"Quite a wonderful lady. Ferocious intellect, progressive and a bit of a feminist (quietly). She took over 200 adult education classes at UCLA, and they actually held a special ceremony for her (and Grandpa, who took a lot of them with her). She took the equivalent of 2 masters in adult ed--anthropology was one. She read literature at the highest level. When looking at her bookshelves six years or so after she died, I found the same books I'd been reading at college and the Iowa Writers' Workshop. William Gaddis' The Recognitions, Gravity's Rainbow, Joyce's Ulysses... I felt considerably humbled and really frustrated not to have had her around. (I like to think I was her favorite, but I'm sure some cousins would give me an argument there.)"

  Research Notes:

Although the family name was spelled "Lundquist" in the 1910 U.S. Census, Bertha and other members of her immediate family spelled their last name "Lindquist."

Her birthplace was given as South Dakota on the marriage certificate of her son William. All other sources have North Dakota, and that is what family notes have as well.
