On 23 Oct 1781, John was commissioned a First Lieutenant of the Gunpowder Upper Battalion of Militia.

John married Mary (Coale/Cole) Cockey on 17 Aug 1785.

John and some of his children and grandchildren, were originally buried on the old tavern property of Stephen Cockey on the east side of Falls Road where it crosses the Green Spring Valley. However, now John and Mary are buried in Sater's Baptist Church Cemetery.

"In Memory of John Cockey, son of Thomas and Prudence Cockey, Was born December 20th 1758, departed this life October 22nd 1824, Aged 65 years 10 months and 2 days."

"In Memory of Thomas Cockey, Son of John and Mary Cockey, was born February 5th 1787, departed this life December 30th 1816, aged 29 years 10 months and 25 days."
