From http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~abrown/bzane.html:

There are many stories of Betty on the internet, but it is accepted by the DAR that she was a heroine at the battle of Ft. Herry, in Wheeling, Virginia. (Now West Virginia)

DAR Lineage Book states she:
"Rendered service 9/12/1782 in the capacity of ammunition bearer at the "second siege"** of Fort Henry. Elizabeth secreted gunpowder in her apron and ran past the unsuspecting enemies to the defenders of the fort, who were out of ammunition."
Listed in D.A.R. Patriot Index, Patriotic Service, VA.
