Goggin

The Goggin family was of Anglo-Saxon ancestry. Their original name is said to
have been De Cogan, and they were domiciled in South Ireland. Stephen Goggin,
Sr., came to Virginia in 1742 from Queen's county, Ireland. He was a member of
the Episcopal church. In 1759 he patented 2O4 acres of land on Flat creek, and
in 1773 patented 452 acres lying on both sides of Flat creek. In 1791 Richard
Goggin married Nancy Irvine; Richard was probably son of Stephen, Sr.
Children of Stephen:

1.Stephen, Jr., m. Rachel, dau. of Thomas and Rachel Clark-Moorman; their
children were:
"Pamela, m. in 1797, Samuel Clemens;
"Polly m. Alexander Gill;
"Nancy m. Obadiah Tate;
"William m. Pamela Tate;
"Elizabeth m., 1st, Samuel Fulkes; m., 2nd, John B. Witt;
"Thomas m. Mary Walden;
"Stephen (3rd) m. Janette Robertson.
"Pleasant M. m. Mary Otey Leftwich., wife of Colonel Pleasant M. Goggin, was the dau. of Rev. Wm. Leftwich (who went by the name of Black-head Leftwich," and was son of William and grandson of Augustine Leftwich, Sr.) and his wife, Frances, dau. of Col. John
Otey. Col. P. M. Goggin was a member of the Virginia Legislature. He died in 1831. Children:

oWilliam L., married twice, Misses Cook, who were cousins of each other. His son, Samuel Cook Goggin, m., 1st, Lizzie D., dau. of Littleberry and Martha P. Moon; m., 2nd, Elsie Lee, dau. of Wm. A. Jones. S. C. Goggin was county clerk of Campbell from 1893 till 1925, when he was succeeded by C. W. Woodson, his son-in-law. Hon. Wm. Leftwich Goggin was a member of Virginia Legislature in 1837, and member of Congress 1839-41-43-47; was one of the Visitors to West Point Academy. In 1859 he was an unsuccessful candidate for governor of Virginia; a member of the Richmond Convention of 1861; served in the Confederate army.
oLucian Buonaparte, born 181O, m. Anne J. Curtis. Colonel Lucien B. Goggin moved to Mason county, Kentucky; served in both houses of Kentucky Legislature
oEmily, born 1812, m. Edmund Matthews; their dau., Mrs. Cornelia Jordan, was a Lynchburg poetess; a volume of her poems were published by her dau., Mrs. Ambler.
oJohn O. L., attorney-at-law of Lynchburg, m. Susan S. Holt.
oElizabeth Frances, born 1818, m. Thomas B. Moorman.
oJames Monroe, born 182O, m. Elizabeth Nelson Page. James M. Goggin, attorney-at-law, was special agent of the Post Office Department to California; established post offices and post-roads in northern California and Southern Oregon. He then moved to Tennessee. He organized a battalion of infantry in the 32nd Virginia Regiment; commanded a brigade at the battle of Cedar Creek; moved to Texas in 1889.
oSarah Paulina, born 1828, m. John R. Steptoe.



Stephen married Lettice Boyd. (Lettice Boyd was born about 1735 in Bedford, Virginia, (United States).)
