  Research Notes:

From an email by George Cloakey 21 Dec 2009 quoting Bill Hayes:

"Written by Lt/Col Ervan Amidon was the following. In 1991 he obtained a copy of a letter written in 1971 by Anna Alicia Papst, (died 1983) daughter of Capt. Rudolph Papst (b. 1858). Col. Amidon said he had done a certain amount of editing of the letter. Col. Amidon wrote:

'Elizabeth Zettell, wife of Rudolph Papst, was born in New York State. She was part Dutch and part German speaking Swiss. She is reputed to have told the Rudolph Papst, born in 1838 (Anna's father), that none of her ancestors and none of Rudolph's ancestors were bond servants nor did they arrive in bride ships. All these ancestors were middle class and able to pay the fare which was very high. It cost as much to travel from Europe to America before the Revolutionary War as to travel today on a fine liner. Also the passengers were expected to bring their own food, and of course, endured many hardships. Many immigrants had sold themselves as bond servants until their fare was paid. Many fine families trace back to these bond servants.

'The Zettells served in the Colonial Wars of America; King William's, Queen Anne's, King George's and the French and Indian Wars.'"

From George Cloakey 21 Dec 2009:
"In a letter written by Marjorie & Gordon Mauer and Marnell Hansen had access to, they said 'the Zettells fought in all the Colonial Wars of America.' They also wrote 'Years later Elizabeth went to Davenport, Iowa to say goodbye to her son, Henry who was leaving for Oregon.

"'He later changed his mind and went to California. She died in Davenport, Iowa in March 1858. Henry took the Bible with him instead of sending it to Rudolph, who was suppossed to get it.'

"The following was written in the summer of 2000 by Doris Louise Papst-Richards, 4899 Rabidue Rd, 7th Street, MI 48027: 'Elizabeth (Zettell) was born in Pennsylvania in 1767."........ Elizabeth later started for California (after Rudolph's death) with her son Johan Heinrich (Henry) but died in Davenport, Iowa on March 18, 1858. She was buried in Rock Island, Illinois. Henry continued on to California.'"

  Birth Notes:

She may have been born in Pennsylvania.

Elisabeth married Rudolph Papst, son of Johan Adam Papst (U.E.L.) and Eva Marie Ham, on 2 Nov 1786 in Reformed Church, Schenectady, (Schenectady), New York, United States. (Rudolph Papst was born about 1759 in <(Schoharie)>, New York, (United States) and died on 29 Jul 1829 in Toronto, York, Upper Canada (Ontario), Canada.)

  Marriage Notes:

Sources differ about the place they were married. An alternative is Helderberg, Albany, New York.
