Spouses/Children:
1. Chief Paschal Fish

Mary Ann McClure 1

  • Born: Abt 1795
  • Marriage (1): Chief Paschal Fish after 1852

Other names for Mary were Mary Ann Clure, Mary Ann McLane, Mary Ann Steel and Mary Anne Steele.

  Research Notes:

Is this the same person as Martha listed as Paschal Fish's wife in the 1854 Indian Census? If so, then should was born around 1814 (age 40 in the 1854 census). See also Martha Captain.

How reliable are the ages given in the 1854 census? Eudora was listed as 9, but in 1854 she should have been only 7 (if she died at age 29 in 1877). If ages are high by 2 or 3 years, Martha could have been born in 1817.

Was this obituary for Mary Ann? If she was really 50 for the 1854 Shawnee census, this is about right.
"FISH, MRS. PASCAL, aged about 50 yrs., d. on the Shawnee Indian Reservation, April 29, 1855." (Lawrence, Herald of Freedom, May 5.)

Or was the obit for a different wife?

--------

http://www.shawnee-traditions.com/Names-7.html gives name of Paschal Fish's first wife as Mary Ann Steele (widow?), Metis, and states she was the mother of Leander. Another source says her maiden name was McClure.

How does she fit in with Hester Zane?

From text accompanying a photograph from the Smithsonian Institution:
"Jackson Fish's mother [Mary Ann Steele?] was one fourth Wyandotte (Huron)." See below for other information.

http://familytrees.genopro.com/beltster/Marshall/default.htm?page=BigTurtleClanOfWyandotts-LeanderAkaLeadingTurtle-ind156834.htm says "[Leander's] mother was Mary Ann nee McClure Steele (5/64th Chalakatha-Thawikila-Pekowi- Creek-Cherokee-Metis)"

Mary married Chief Paschal Fish, son of William Jackson Fish and Martha "Polly" Rogers, after 1852. (Chief Paschal Fish was born about 1796 in Shawnee Tribe, (Kansas Territory), (United States) 2 and died about 4 Feb 1893 in Baxter Springs, Cherokee, Kansas, United States 3.)
