From Wikipedia - Épernon :
Épernon is a commune in the Eure-et-Loir department and Centre region of France . It lies some 27 km northeast of Chartres , at the confluence of the Drouette and the Guesle .
History
Épernon was originally the home of the counts of Montfort and Amaury . In the 11th century, they raised the fortresses of Épernon and Montfort for the protection of the Château de St Léger and granted a charter to the town. Four doors gave access to the medieval city: the door of Chartres, the door of Geolle, the door of Paris and the door of Beauce . Above the doors an inscription paid homage to the village that previously existed there: Autrist fut jadis mon nom/A présent on me nomme Espierremont (Autrist was once my name/now my name is Espierremont). Charters of the 12th and 13th century variously refer to the town as Sparno and Sparnonum, but by the 14th century it had evolved to Esparnon and Espernon, very close to its present appellation.
In the 13th century it became an independent lordship, which remained attached to the crown of Navarre till, in the 16th century, it was sold by Henry III of France to Jean Louis de Nogaret de La Valette , for whom it was raised to the rank of a duchy in 1581. De Nogaret's second son, Bernard (1592-1661), succeeded his father to the dukedom and after his death, the title was borne by the families of Goth and of Pardaillan .

From Shenandoah Valley Pioneers, pp. 436-437 :
It seems appropriate to mention this family, as brief notices are given the families living along Cedar Creek and the North Mountain during the 18th Century. But we cannot claim the family for these sections exclusively; for we find Isaac Zane in Winchester at one time, dispensing lavish hospitality. He owned several desirable properties, and, as shown elsewhere, was a substantial friend of the old Winchester Academy in its early history. At one time he lived in Stephensburg. He had temporary residence at his Marlboro Iron Works, and spent some time with his friend Maj. Mordecai Bean, while engaged in testing the ores of the North Mountain in a smelter which they started on Bean's large tract. There is some confusion about this name. Some writers fix Isaac Zane's first appearance as one of the first pioneers, and also as Genl. Isaac Zane of the Revolutionary War period; and Col. Isaac Zane one of the Burgesses, 1773; and member of the Virginia Convention, 1775; and member of the first House of Delegates, 1784. The father and son were confounded. Isaac Zane Snior came first. It was in 1767 that he purchased 350 acres of land along the North Mountain from Henry Secrist, adjoining Michael White and Jacob Cackley. He was then a resident of Philadelphia; and it is doubtful if he ever lived in Virginia. Isaac Zane, Jr., obtained from Lewis Stephens in 1771, a large tract of land on Cedar Creek. The language of the deed points to two facts worth notice: "To Isaac Zane Junr. Iron Master, for land on Cedar Creek, includes the land where the Dutch Chapel stands and adjoins John Stickley, Craybill and Henry Piper." This was the tract where he conducted his iron works, and other business. In 1776 he acquired more land near Stephensburg, where he had resided. Part of this tract he sold to Joseph Holmes a merchant in the same village. Subsequent to this period, we find him living near his Marlboro Iron Works, and taking an active part in politics, as shown elsewhere. While a member of the house of Burgesses, he was commissioned Colonel in the Virginia Line. In the new organization, after the Revolutionary War, he was commissioned Brigadier-General of Militia, and was not a Brigadier during the war. He died in his Frederick home in 1795, possessed of great wealth for that period, owning large landed estate (9,000 acres), some of which consisted of many lots lying on South Washington and Stewart Streets, Winchester. He also owned the land where the old Winchester Academy stood. His will, recorded in the old District Court, mentions two sisters, Hanna Pemberton and Sarah Zane, to whom he left the bulk of his estate in Frederick County, with annuity to Isaac Zane McFarlane. He further provided for the gradual emancipation of his twenty-one slaves. The inventory of his personal estate shows he was a merchant, distiller, miller and founder. He was doubtless an educated man. His library contained many rare volumes. These and his valuable furniture naturally found places in many homes after the sale of his effects, which required several days. We cannot follow his name further. The family were prominent in reclaiming the country from the Indians, as already shown in this volume. He was grated several thousand acres of land along the Ohio and Monongahela Rivers, which was inherited by his family. One branch of this family were pioneers of the South Branch Valley. During the Indian Wars, Wm. Zane and his family were carried away as prisoners by the Indians in 1753. One of his sons has been previously mentioned in connection with Ohio settlements.
Genl. Zane lived in his stone mansion--as he termed it in his letters. This was near his iron works and mill, and a short distance North of the site of the present mill of D. S. Brill. Near by was his large warehouse or store, the walls of which were of heavy stone. The ruins of these buildings were to be seen until about 1890. The ruins of the old iron works can be seen at this writing [1909].

----------------------
The transcription of a typewritten autobiography by Edward H. Wallace dated 4 May 1920 follows:
A few of the changes in the
life of Edward Harold Wallace.
Facts arranged May 4, 1920.
Parents: John Donald Wallace and Hannah Patmore Wallace.
Born in a log house on a rented farm, near Ponsonby, P.O., Pilkington Tp., Wellington Co., Ontario, Canada, April 16, 1872. Children preceding, Maud, now wife of Dr. H. H. Healy, Grand Forks, North Dakota; William Havelock, executive secretary Y.M.C.A., Los Angeles. Following, Ernest Hazlewood, Attorney, New Orleans, Lewis Herbert, President First National Bank, Newport Beach, California; Charles Horace, Cashier same bank at time of death, February, 1914. In 1879 family removed to Elora [Wellington Tp, Wellington Co., Ontario, Canada], five miles distant. November 1880 to Lincoln, Nebraska residing on a farm ten miles distant until February , 1881 when removed to Drayton, North Dakota, the family exchequer consisting of $2.40. Father filed on pre-emption one mile from town to which family removed in April and mother died the next month. Three years later father returned to Canada and married Mary Larter, mother's particular friend. To this union came Gertrude, who died at the age of two years; Ella Irene, in 1887 and Maxwell Raymond, 1890.
The railroad came to Drayton in 1887. In September, 1887 went with older brother [William H. Wallace] to Hamline University, St. Paul [Minnesota], where brother had been a short time the previous year. In December father sold his land and other property at Drayton to go to Pasadena, California and go into business with his brothers Albert and Frank who had preceded him. Will and Ed joined the party in Minneapolis. Father, after arriving, decided otherwise, bought other farms at Drayton and returned in March, 1888. Will and Ed helped with the farm work and returned to Hamline in the fall. Thus they continued until they finished the preparatory course, Ed working for the Nebraska Telephone Company in Lincoln, Nebraska, for fifteen months. Both returned to Hamline and were graduated together in 1895. Both worked hard throughout the course supplementing the assistance their father could give them. The summer of [18]93 Will was conductor on street-car line in St. Paul and Ed sold papers and collected and distributed laundry at the race-track of the State Fair Grounds. In December 1895 Ed took an office position with the Amenia and Sharon Land Co. at Amenia, North Dakota, setting about diligently to learn the grain business. In 1898 he enlisted in the North Dakota regiment for Philippine service but was disqualified because of physical defect and returned to his work at Amenia. That summer he went to Prescott, Wisconsin to ask Eleanor Dill to marry him. When they were in college together he thought he loved her but went out to get started in business and learn for sure. When they found that love was mutual, things took the usual course. They became engaged July 28th and were married the following July 27th. Eleanor's Uncle, M. T. Dill, had grown old in the grain business at Prescott and, to be relieved of some of the burden, invited Wallace to join with him and two of his old-time Employees in the M. T. Dill Grain Company. This partnership was effected August 1, 1900 and continued for eight years. Here four children were born to the couple-Jean, July 10, 1900; John Donald, July 8, 1903; Marjorie, March 23, 1905 and William Dill January 5, 1907.
In Prescott Wallace took an active part in civic matters, having been the first public librarian of the City, the first Secretary of the Commercial Club, Alderman for his ward and, being President of the Council, acting mayor for some weeks on the resignation of the mayor. He was active as Trustee in the Methodist Church and kept up an active interest in alumni circles of his Alma Mater. He was President of the Alumni Association for a term, the first member of the Hamline University Board of turstees [sic] to be selected by the Alumni. At the insistence of the President he held this office after his removal to the Pacific Coast.
To Long Beach, California the family removed in July, 1908 where he took a position in the Exchange National Bank which had been organized by his brother Will. He was soon made Assistant Cashier and Director. From this position he went to the Marine Commercial and Savings Bank as Vice President in January, 1916. This bank was then about two years old, had deposits of $300,000, and was paying no dividends. Now it has deposits of two and a half millions, is paying ten percent and earning much more.
Another child, Eleanor Thompson, was born into this family January 16, 1914.
Wallace has taken a lively interest in civic affairs in Long Beach. He was a member of the East Side Improvement Association Committee that put through the purchase by the City of the two existing water companies that were giving very inferior service; he was elected to the freeholders' Committee which framed the City Charter of 1914, was four years a member of the School Board serving as Vice President and President. In Long Beach he has continued his activities in church work and several benevolent organizations. During the war he was successively private and corporal in the home-guards resigning when ordered by the surgeon to do so.
